Purpose: one word and an endless road of possibilities.

As humans, finding our purpose has been one of the more dedicated pieces of our psychology in understanding who we are. The universe aligns itself in its natural state. Everything around us knows its place in the world, from the plants in the forest to the birds in the sky. Humans were offered something much bigger; free will. Free will leads to a means to an end.

As a society, we have become accustomed to instant gratification and an illusion of what it means to have a purpose in life. A purpose is something that everyone has in their lives. It can take on many different forms and shapes depending on their desires, strengths, and weaknesses. We’re born with a purpose and allowed to change our direction and find meaning in life.

The word “purpose” is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as “the reason for which something is done, made, or exists.” That’s obvious. However, many of us are struggling with finding our purpose. We’re working to see our need to exist.

We’re constantly told that we can be anything we want, do anything we want, and achieve anything we want. But the truth is that not everyone will be able to live up to their potential because they don’t know what they are capable of. I want to emphasize that I do believe we can achieve much in this life, but our purpose is to find the most natural skills we have and maximize them. So how do we change this concept of purpose? What do we do to become aligned with our purpose?

Let go of control

Control is a concept we all struggle with. We feel that every piece of our lives has to be controlled by our thoughts, ideas, and concepts. Imagine the amount of stress we can alleviate ourselves if we decide to let go and let the world guide us toward the life we’re designed for. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t strive for anything our mind is set on; it means to let go of the expectations that come with the things we do. If we place expectations on something, we can create disappointment in true other things. This can lead to a feeling of powerlessness and even helplessness.

We need to stop placing expectations on things and instead take them for what they are. The world is not perfect, and it never will be either.

The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be helpful, honorable, compassionate, and have it make some difference that you have lived well.
